In the seventeenth century, a number of iron foundries opened in Finland. The extensive forests combined with unlimited water power and good shipping connections made the Pohja region ideal as a center for the Finnish metal industry. The ironworks in Antskog opened around 1630, Billnäs followed in 1641. Fiskars opened its doors in 1649. Today it is one of the oldest enterprises in the Western world.
